The Turnaround - 2008 Issues

Dec. 13th, 2008

The 18th edition of the Turnaround has been posted. Click here

    After the by-now accustomed ramblings, this issue starts with some important news regarding the position of president. After that, normal service is kinda resumed. There's a report from the annual awards banquet and Marie-Claude Grégoire gets all practical about M-Dot tattoos. We're organizing another shoe-drive in Halifax this winter and you can find out about that here too. In case you think the new acting president is getting too big for his boots, he gets cut back down to size (and no power of veto was exercised here - Ed)‏. There’s a bit from the ‘cross series (we still get a slightly feeling of nausea when we think if it) and the last words of the years last issue go to Chris Milburn who tells us of Julie Curwin’s recent success as an author.

    As has been said before, most of us, whether self-identified triathletes, runners, cyclists or generalised pain-enthusiasts take time off in the winter to recharge their batteries after the cycle of train-race-train-race-train-race and before gearing up again for the coming season. At the TA we're also all feeling a bit weary after nine months of writing, proof reading and rewriting so, as with you all, we will be taking a short break from writing and this will be our last issue for the year.

    Many thanks to all of those who have helped out over the year (in no particular order); Mark Campbell, Brenda Topliss, Kurt Stevenson, Greg MacKenzie, Glenn Bannon, Marie-Claude Grégoire, Jason Lawton, Jen Lawton, Marie Soehl, Tom Rogers, Jen Worden, Norma-Jean Worden Rogers, Chris Milburn, Emily Wood, iRon Allen, Chris MacKenzie, Paul Shaw, Sarah Wood and Kevin Doran have all sent in write-ups, photos, miscellaneous facts or just helped to get this thing off my hard-drive and onto yours (and our apologies if we missed anyone).

    The TA will probably head for it's winter break after the next issue when at least one of the team (well OK, me) will attempt to put on a prodigious amount of winter weight in the style of Jan "Who Ate All The Pies" Ullrich. Nevertheless, as always we're looking for contributions; tell us where you've been, what you've done or what really cool kit you just got. Or a silly photo. All's good. Besides, it's never too early to get next years 'voluntold' box ticked (yes I know it's still this year but the banquet's been held and I'll vouch for you; Dan need never know!).

    Until next year, happy Holidays...

    Congratulations everyone for making it through another year of racing and training. The annual awards banquet was held last week and officially closed out the 2008 season, a full list of winners is on the website and there'll be a banquet report in the next issue.

    Even though the season is over, this is still a fairly full issue. There are race reports from the Riverport Duathlon, the season closer, and the Cyclesmith Cyclocross. Somewhat related to the 'cross, I got a bit philosophical under the combined effects of a really hard cyclocross race, no food afterwards and 1% lidocaine SubQ and the end result was something about aging in triathlons. Finally, before some silly pictures, Marie-Claude Grégoire tells of her first steps towards IMC 2009. As we were putting this issue to bed came the news that last weekend, several of our own did the 70.3 Worlds; we know of Cliff Worden-Rogers 4:18:08, Caryn Small Legs Nagge 5:29:05 and Debi Peverill 5:58:57. We’ll bring you more when we know more.

    For those of you on the Run Nova Scotia mailing list, we were asked recently for an article for their newsletter, The Raconteur, so when you read it, yes, it really is from us. Some of the jokes were recycled from previous editions of the TA, and for that I apologise in advance!

    Till next time, keep it rubber side down; there's still time for one last bike-ride before the snow flies....

    As this TA was being written as we all heard the news of Adrian Campbell’s passing from cancer. Adrian was a great competitor, winning duathlons left, right and centre, yet despite his dominance he was never arrogant or aloof and always had time for a chat. His loss has been felt throughout the endurance-sport community. Although on their calendar for some time, but now with some added piquancy, three of our own, Mark Campbell, Amy Gough and iRon Allen will be taking part in the Ride For Life to raise awareness of cancer and cancer charities. This is a 4300 km relay-ride from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Austin, Texas where the riders will join with the Lance Armstrong LiveStrong Challenge on October 25-26. More information can be found at http://www.tonygriffinfoundation.com. Part of the challenge Mark, Amy and Ron face is that of fundraising; you can go to the Tony Griffin website and drill down through the Donate and Sponsor A Rider tabs to directly support them or any of the fifty-two riders on the team. You can see some photos of Adrian in some of his last events, the Cyclesmith Duathlon and Du It Like Bryan at Picasaweb (http://picasaweb.google.ca/Cyclesmith/AdrianCampbell).

    Elsewhere in this issue of the TurnAround we have a wrap-up of all the triathlon action in Nova Scotia, and in some cases beyond, since the provincial championships in Port Hood back in July. It was a long time coming, and contains stories, anecdotes and photographs from a very many individuals; thank-you all for sharing and letting everyone know what’s been going on.

    There is a race preview for the last TNS event of the season, the Riverport Duathlon on October 19th. New this year is a shorter Do-A-Du for the young, young at heart and those who have a deep philosophical hatred of Grimm Road. Also we have a race reports from Brenda Topliss who was at the Ottawa Iron-distance races and from Marie-Claude Gregoire who was at the Army Run, also in Ottawa. Canada Games Coach Jason Lawton tell us some more on the CG selection process.

    In this issue, some Shubie stories from the RD, Mark Campbell as well as a Youth team report from the Drummondville Quebec Cup and the Espirt Triathlon. We finish this time with a frankly scary video from YouTube that we present as a Public Service Announcement. Don't start your month off yet, there's still the Riverport Duathlon in a month and plenty of running races too.

    A nearly full season wrap-up and a Riverport duathlon preview to come in the next issue

    See you at the running races

In these issues;

    In this week’s issue a race report and some photos from the Doctors Nova Scotia Provincial Triathlon Championships a week or so ago. Matthias Jaepel took a third consecutive victory whilst we added a new name to the Provincial Triathlon Champion trophy; welcome Heather Doucette. The past couple of weeks have also seen the running of Ironman Lake Placid and Newfoundland 70.3, both with NS representation; we have a round-up of the results.

    This weekend (August 3rd) is the Atlantic Regional Triathlon Championship at the Bridgetown Triathlon in the Valley. As well as Regionals the event also includes the Provincial Youth Championships (in the Youth/Try-A-Tri), a sprint and a long course, not to mention a KOS on the Saturday. Chuck in a pasta dinner (the TA's current favourite discipline) and there's something for everyone.

    Coming up in the three weeks following Bridgetown are the last three triathlons in Nova Scotia this year; Yarmouth, Pictou County and Guysborough County. Not long to get your triathlon fix now; don't be shy - there's time to rest this winter (it's plenty long enough).

    There will be some familiar names absent from the Bridgetown start- and run-sheets this weekend as Jennifer Lawton takes the Juniors to Summerside for the Canada Games trial event. The Summerside start-sheet reads like a roll-call from the race of death, but we know they'll all do just great; good luck all. Also, good luck to HTC honco Linda McLeod who also goes to Summerside to attend the "Advanced Whistle Blowing" National Technical Official course.

In these issues;

    After a short rest, well for some, it's back to action and all hands to the (floor)-pumps as we collectively squeeze another 10 psi into our race-wheels in preparation for the second half of the TNS triathlon season. In TA 11 we have a quick look at results from last Sunday's (July 13th) racing from the Acadien Triathlon de Pubnico, St Georges Tri Fest, Triathlon de Gatineau and the Rhode Island 70.3.

    The TNS road-show gets back on the 100 series highways this weekend and the TA looks forward to the Provincial Championships in Port Hood on Sunday (July 20th) although to be frank this weekend is looking less of a road-show and more of one-man band, or perhaps a baroque string quintet! Go register for Provincials before you read this TA! We also have a quick peak at the half-dozen who are doing Ironman USA at Lake Placid this weekend.

    Don't forget, the season is half over already and we can only guarantee another only five more triathlons this season; PH this w/e, Bridgetown (August 3, Regional Championships), Yarmouth (August 10), Pictou (August 17) and finally Guysborough on August 24th. Then there's a break until the Riverport Duathlon all the way back there in October and then it starts snowing again. Go get racing; you've been waiting (and training) all winter for it and its nearly over already! You know you want to....

    See you on the road

In this issue;

    In this issue of the TurnAround we have a race preview for this weekend’s 14 Wing Greenwood Triathlon and Duathlon and if this whets your appetite, there's still time to register. We also have some pictures of from last weekend’s Heart Of The Highlands triathlon which was notable as much for the nearly $2000 prize-money on offer as for the fact we finally had sunshine at a race this year!

    Our occasional MD, Marie-Claude Gregoire (that is she occasionally writes for us, rather than an occasionally being an MD) tells us the last research into the effects of caffeine on endurance athletes; a subject close to many of our hearts, we are sure. Speaking of MDs Ron Allen tells us about the Heartlands Tour, a province-wide event to raise awareness of cardiac health issues. It may be coming to a community near you, check it out. And speaking of mass bike-rides (we're all about the segues at the TA nowadays) it has been bought to our attention that July 5th sees the World Naked Bike Ride in Halifax; "Less Gas, More Ass" as their slogan goes. We're wondering if helmets are mandatory. And remember, there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing?

    See you in the Valley this weekend, tri-suits most definitely not optional

In this issue;

    Another week, another TurnAround . This week we have a brief race report from DILB organiser Mark Campbell, who put on another glorious mudfest last weekend. Good luck too to Mark and fellow CTR teamie Jan Trojanowski who we hear are going to an adventure race in Montana this week. We also have a race preview for this weekend's Heart Of The Highlands. As you may have heard, the RD has confirmed a $400 cash prize for the Olympics winners and $300 for the Sprint. Each! That makes it a richer race than Investors Group or even Provincials. Money goes down to third too, so even if you think you can't win, chances are you could win your gas money back. Sweet.

    Next up after this weekend is the 14 Wing Greenwood event; it's pretty flat and should be fast. Then it's quick taper before some more off-road fun at the Kayack/MTB/Run event in Pubnico on July 12th and the Provinicial Championships in Port Hood on the 20th.

In this issue;

    Guys, a short issue this week that has a race report from the Cyclesmith Duathlon from Kurt Stevenson as well as a race preview, including our notorious predictions, for this weeks Du It Like Bryan off-road duathlon in Wentworth.

    Next on the calendar we travel to Ingonish nect weekend for the Heart Of The Highlands (June 22nd). If you didn’t make it to the Cabot Trail Relay, and even if you did, you owe it to yourself to race on this nationally rated course. We’ll bring you a course preview next week. If stunning views aren’t enough incentive, then try this. We have received word that the HOTH prize list is just as breathtaking as the scenery; $300 for the Sprint winner and a whopping $400 for the Olympic winner. Speaking of making it to the Cabot Trail we understand we forgot to mention Trish McCourt who ran a 1:58 leg#5 a week after running as a pace-bunny at Bluenose. Sorry for the omission.

    Don’t forget the 14 Wing Greenwood Triathlon on the Canada Day Weekend (June 29th ), it’s a nice, flat course which should be fast. We understand you won’t have to dodge Auroras doing touch-and-goes on the bike course, which is nice.

    Provincial Championships are at Port Hood on July 20th, so you’ve still got some time for quality training before the taper. Regional Championships are at Bridgetown on August 3rd. Seeing as all the Juniors are racing the Canada Games trial event that weekend on PEI this could be your only chance to win a Sprint. Don’t say we didn’t tell you!

    Well the season has started in earnest now with the running of the Navy Tridents Triathlon. Jason Lawton and Emily Wood took top honours. The full results are in this issue and we'll bring y ou a race report and hopefully photos next time. The next event is the 22nd running of the Cyclesmith Duathlon this Sunday (June 8th), there's still plenty of time to register and we have a race preview. The week after that is the Du It Like Bryan Duatlon and RD Mark Campbell tells us more about this event. We also have race reports from the Bluenose and the Cabot Trail Relay. Finally, good luck to all of those going to Vancouver for the Worlds this week.

    This issue contains a race-report and photos from the first racing rendezvous of the season; the 26th Moose Run, 25 kms of hills and wind! Also some bitter-sweet reporting as this issue has a bit of a goodbye vibe to it as the Editor will be leaving us for a while. But hey, on the bright side, you can see spring is coming!

The 2008-2 Turnaround newsletter has been posted to the web-site.

    Hi Triathletes,

    The racing season is almost upon us and this season's plans should be taking shape nicely. The new issue of the TurnAround contains the 2008 race schedule to help that planning process, plus a preview of the new TNS promotional postcards. We have reports from the recent AGM, including a list of the new executive (Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!). We also have a few words on getting your bike ready for the season plus how I got that new bike smell for zero net cash outlay. Finally, while it's still winter, Mark Campbell tells us how he's been keeping busy on the trails; it makes me tired just reading it.

    See you at the Moose

Jan. 29, 2008

The 2008-1 Turnaround newsletter has been posted to the web-site.

    Welcome to the first of the 2008 editions of the TurnAround, Triathlon Nova Scotia's e-newsletter. Our mission is to foster a feeling a community between triathletes from Sydney to Yarmouth by bringing you original articles on triathlon and multisport on a monthly basis. We are always looking for articles on your experiences of triathlon, training for triathlon and the triathlon community so don't be shy and drop us a line. Got a favourite bit of winter kit you think we should all know about? Have a sure-fire way to stay motivated when it's -20C and blowing a blizzard? How's your club making out? Are you currently living somewhere warm and sunny and not missing fingertip- threatening windchills or did you just get posted to an early warning station in Tuktoyaktuk and are wondering what all the fuss is about 'cos you're still getting in 50 miles a week? Let us know and we'll tell the other readers, both of them.

    In this issue of the TurnAround we are pleased to welcome a new semi-regular columnist, Marie-Claude Gregoire, who'll be trawling peer-reviewed literature and telling us how the mainstream scientific community regards us and our activities (awe and bemusement, usually, endurance athletes apparently make great lab-rats!). This week Marie-Claude brings us a retrospective study on sudden-death rates during marathons. We also have reports from the usual suspects. The TA was at the launch at Cyclesmith of a new line of bespoke-built, full-on carbon-framed time-trial (read triathlon) bikes and, in a case of going from the sublime to the ridiculous, there's also report on a full-on steel bike with no gears and a spoke count higher than my weight. Also "top five reasons when you know it was an epic training run" and "what's your triathlon-stripper name"? Take it easy out there
